Before Aleppo in Syria became known as the world’s most destroyed city there was another city in ruins that was famous in the news.
Groznyj, the capital of former Sovjet republic of Chechnya was almost completely destroyed during the two wars of independence that took place during the 1990s.
I visited Groznyj in January 1997 just before the presidential elections took place. I walked around and took pictures you can see on this page. The city was in ruins but there was some hope for piece before the fighting started again a couple of years later.
I was born i Warsaw, Poland in 1947. 70 years ago that city was a stone desert that looked just like the syrian cities today or Groznyj 20 years ago. When I watch the images of Aleppo on TV it reminds me of the destruction brought by war and by ruthless people using modern weapons. The question remains: which city will be next to be bombed into ruins by humans who do not seem to care about their own creations?
